You may have noticed that Logie Steading is flying a new flag at the front of the Steading buildings. If you didn’t recognise it, we’re proud to inform you that it is the official Moray Flag!
The Moray Lieutenancy announced a competition back in 2023, inviting entries for flag designs for the county. Out of 636 submissions, a shortlist and public vote, it was the design of Aila Gibson of Dallas Primary School which was selected as the winner.
The winning design was revealed at a ceremony held at Elgin Town Hall, with the county’s, now retired, Lord Lieutenant Seymour Monro and Deputy Lieutenant, Nancy Robson.
The flags have since been registered with the Court of the Lord Lyon which regulates heraldry in Scotland, as well as the UK Flag Registry, and are being hoisted across Moray.
The green hoist and golden garb (wheat sheaf) recall the rich agricultural output of the county, whilst the wavy blue and yellow reference the sea and sand of the coast. This coastal meaning in turn represents the origin of the name Moray itself, coming from the Gaelic or Pictish indicating a connection with the sea.
Aila’s dad runs Macbeth’s butchers, who Logie Farm Shop work closely with, and her Mum runs the Old Market Refill Store, which are both in Tolbooth St, Forres. Well done that local lass!
