Forestry is one of the backbones of the Estate and has been for many years. Although not directly employing nearly as many as would have been the case 100 years ago, forestry, alongside farming, created and now helps to maintain Logie’s landscape. Forestry also continues to play a major part in the economy of the Estate and the local area.

While farming takes up a lot of Estate land, forestry takes up much of the remaining land. Moray has a long tradition of timber production, and that tradition leads to a high standard of management. This, in turn, results in a high-quality end product used in a variety of fields from house construction through fencing and pallet production to generating heat and power.

The long term nature of our forest management also gives us the “broken up” mosaic of differing aged woodland and open ground which helps make the local area so attractive.

In 2017 Logie Timber was established; a medium scale sawmill business focussing on milling Scottish timber for the local market. Larch and Douglas Fir are the main species used in the sawmill with an increasing amount of Scots Pine. These species are all grown on the Estate and the timber is used in the sawmill where possible.

Native broadleaf trees are a key part of the landscape at Logie and we regularly review areas that may be suitable for new planting. During the 2020 lockdown we planted 2 areas close to Logie Steading, aptly named Covid Copse. If you head out towards the river from Logie Steading you walk through these areas; its already difficult to remember how it was before the mix of native trees, planted by hand by a merry band of volunteers, has transformed this small corner of the Estate.
