Scotland is the home of salmon fishing, famed for its beautiful rivers and magnificent scenery and salmon fishing on the River Findhorn at Logie is no exception. The estate offers interesting and exciting fishing on the beautiful River Findhorn, covering a total of 3.25 miles of the river with the downstream limit being about 9.5 miles from the river mouth. The Findhorn is a medium sized spate river, and the Logie section covers some spectacular gorge scenery with the chance to catch a mixture of salmon and grilse, and, occasionally, sea trout.

When to Fish
Although the season for salmon and sea trout runs from mid-February to the end of September, fish do not normally reach Logie and Relugas until April or early May (timing is dependent on water temperature, which needs to reach 42degF for salmon to come up the Sluie falls just below Logie) and fishing continues until late September.
Fish caught in April, May and early June are predominately salmon, with grilse normally starting to run in late May. Thereafter a mixture of salmon and grilse are caught. Few sea trout are caught.
The Fishing on Logie Estate: Logie and Relugas Beats
All fishing is from the right bank and is fly only. We offer fishing for a maximum of four rods.
- The Logie Beat (2 rods) is fished Monday to Saturday.
- The Relugas Beat (2 rods) is split into the Middle Beat (fished Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and the Upper Beat (fished Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday).
Relugas and Logie Beats can be taken together, or separately. Please note that if you take one or other section of the river, you are restricted to fishing only in these areas on the appropriate days. The beats are normally let by the week, although 3-day and even 1-day lets are available for certain dates. Please contact us if you have a specific date in mind.
We have a resident ghillie, Ewen Manson, who is a real expert on this stretch of the river, as well as rod, reel and line – both of which can be booked or not as you prefer. We also provide a comprehensive pool guide, written by Ewen, who will normally be available to show you onto the river and get you started in the best spots for the current conditions.

The scenery and walks are truly spectacular, Logie Steading Visitor Centre with its cafe, playpark and artisanal shops is on the doorstep, there are a host of golf courses, outdoor activities, beaches, distilleries and historic sites in the area as well as accommodation of all types to make your fishing trip a holiday the whole family can enjoy.

Logie is in a beautiful part of Scotland with plenty to see and do for fishermen and non-fishermen alike. If you are considering a trip with the whole family, there are a host of activities as well as the excellent Logie Steading Visitor Centre right here – and the stunning Moray coastline, Cairngorms, historic castles & towns and much more just a short drive away.
All beats have a variety of pools with some suitable for most heights of water. Little wading is necessary and there is vehicle access to within about half a mile of all pools. River paths are good however the fishing is within the Findhorn gorge and access to some of the pools is quite steep. Note: Aside from fishermen others, including canoeists and rafters, enjoy this stretch of river and mutual respect and consideration is required.

Rod & Reel
Fly rod, 12-15 feet, optimum size 13 feet
Single handed rod 9-11 feet for low water summer fishing
Fly reel to match rod.
Fly Lines
Any standard floating line with AFTM.
Rating to match fly rod.
Spey lines are very popular as they improve casting.
Multi-tip Spey lines are very good for spring fishing in different weather conditions as you can fish different depths of water.
Leaders
Polyleaders. A selection of these from slow sink 5 feet to superfast sink 10 feet.
Leader material.
12-18lb for spring fishing
6-10lb for sumer fishing
Maxima Chameleon recommended by Ewen.
Flies
A selection of salmon flies, sizes 6-12, singles and doubles.
Types: Cascade, Willie Gunn, Junction Shrimp, Tosh, Ally’s Shrimp, Findhorn Killer, Logie, Flamethrower, Stoat’s Tail, Blue Charm, Hairy Mary.
Plus a selection of tube flies ½ inch to 2 inch various patterns as mentioned above.
Collie Dogs and Hitched Flies can work well when conditions dictate.
Clothing
Footwear: Wading is not often required so good walking boots or wellies are the norm.
Knotless net: When returning fish use knotless net, try not to take the fish out of the water as they can easily be damaged. Slip hook out and gently hold fish in current to recover and release. Do Not lift fish by tail as this can damage backbone.

Relugas – Top Beat
Scum Pool.
Good spring and summer pool. Fishes best low to medium height of water.
Brahn Pool.
Difficult pool to fish. Fishes best in low water. Speycasting an advantage.
White Stream.
Good grilse holding water when river is low.
Slate Pool.
Fishes best in low to medium water. Very good visual fishing when on high bank. Very exciting.
Fish Pool.
Wonderful pool to fish in medium height of water. Can hold a lot of fish at times.
Bridge Pool.
Great pool in all heights of water. Very good in early spring and can produce some big fish
Relugas Middle Beat
Dounduff.
Fishes well in early season, April-May when fish are just arriving from the sea. Low to Medium height of water is best.
Muckle Stronach.
This pool is very underfished because access is not so easy but can be very good in summer for grilse in low to medium water.
Little Stronach.
Another good pool in summer when grilse are running. Good in low water. Very streamy.
Dullan.
The Dullan is probably the best pool on the Middle Beat. It fishes well all season and holds fish in low to medium water.
Skerries.
The best high water pool on the whole stretch. Fishes very well when the water is between 3 feet and 6 feet on the guage.
Pool of Peck.
Quite difficult to fish as you are on a high bank but holds a lot of fish in low water. Cast square and let fly. Speed up with current. Takes are very aggressive.
Randolph’s Leap.
The leap is great to fish as it is very visual and you can see the fish take the fly. Very hard to fish on your own.
Artist’s Pool.
Very difficult to fish. High rock ledge and almost impossible to land fish on your own. Very exciting.
Junction Pool.
Junction is the last pool on the middle beat but one of the best in medium to high water. Long stretch of fishing about 150m. You see quite a lot of fish moving here.
Logie Beat
Lookout Pool.
Not a very productive pool but fine in very high water at the tail of the pool.
Broom Pool.
Very good in medium to high water. Bottom two thirds fishes best, great in the early spring. Some big fish caught here.
Sandy’s Kist.
Fishes best in low to medium height water. Fish tend to show quite a bit at the neck of the pool when water is low and tail when water is at medium to high.
Garden Pool.
This pool is the nearest to the fishing hut, good in medium to high water when fish are running. Easy pool to fish for beginners.
Mill Pool.
This pool fishes best in low water.
Red Rock.
Very good pool in low to medium height, really nice stretch of fly water. Track down to the pool is quite steep.
Ewen’s Pool.
This can be very good in high water. Very difficult to land fish, but great fun to be had.
Craigiehall.
Great pool in medium height of water. Fish come into the tail of pool and rest. Bottom half of pool is best. Good in spring and summer.
Cave Pool.
Great pool in early spring when water is low. Holds a lot of fish as they come out of the gorge. Tail end can be very good in summer.
Poacher’s Pot.
Last pool on the beat. Difficult to get to but can be good in low water in summer.
